Drunk driving is a serious cause of car or truck accidents. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is reckless and irresponsible, and can lead to devastating consequences including damage to property, severe injuries and loss of life. An intoxicated driver not only puts himself at risk, but also puts other road users at risk of losing their lives or vehicle damage.
A driver who makes a decision to drive while intoxicated does so without regard to the consequences that may result from the act. Therefore, in the event of an accident, such a driver may be made to face criminal charges as well as a civil suit.
Besides facing criminal charges, victims can pursue a civil lawsuit to be compensated for the pain, injury and losses. In some cases, the criminal court may offer restitution to the DUI accident victim as a form of compensation.
